WHY HAVE A NEW PORTUGUESE TRANSLATION?
This project aims at liberating the revelation in order to have a Portuguese translation in public domain and free of copyrights.
We believe that The Urantia Book copyright should be free to the whole world. The Urantia Book belongs to humankind, not to a specific human organization. We can understand the zeal for its copyright in the early times of its appearance, but not now when the original text is all over the internet and any attempt of distorting it would not prevail.
Hence, a Portuguese translation of The Urantia Book will be available for anyone who wishes to print and distribute FOR FREE the Fifth Epochal Revelation Documents. Thus, no selling of books will ever be authorized from this version of the Urantia Documents, only its FREE distribution.

RESPECTING THE REVELATORS’ WRITING OPTIONS
This translation aims at being closer to the original and devoid of any personal writing style, since the Urantia Documents are to be delivered throughout several centuries ahead, for generations to come that will have a much different mindset, and the revelators’ options for content and style surely had all of that in mind.
The revelators are heavenly people, experienced cosmic spiritual scientists and philosophers. It was no accident the words they chose and how they expressed them.
Precisely because this is not any given text, rather THE DIVINE REVELATION for the whole humankind throughout the Third Millennium, we opted to follow the text the revelators gave us; so, instead of any personal writing style, we focus on what and how the revelators have chosen to deliver their message.

WHICH LANGUAGE VERSION WILL BE PREDOMINANT?
For non-speakers of Portuguese, it must be made clear that concerning a formal speech – which is the case of The Urantia Documents – the language is basically the same, whether from Brazil, Portugal, or the African and Asian former colonies. We can only find a slight difference in the usage of personal pronouns, although even so all usages are easily and unequivocally understood by any Portuguese speaker from any continent.
Having this in mind, it was decided in this translation to use the Brazilian fashion, considering that Brazil has more than 210 million people (and growing fast as we speak, for this is a nation of continental dimensions), and Portugal has something like 11 million inhabitants (and with little possibilities of expanding – actually, Brazilian people are “invading” Portugal, and for example, Braga, the third main city of Portugal, has more than 10% of Brazilian emigrants already and this percentage is on the rise). Concerning the former colonies from Africa, they only use Portuguese as their official language because their native languages are diffused throughout many tribal languages. We can state for sure that the Portuguese language in the long run will be more and more Brazilian as the future unfolds.
A significant change from the older version will be in pronouns, since the previous Portuguese translation format is based on “thy”, “thou”, “thy”, “thine”, etc., which in the Bible is comparable to the King James version, and this new translation will be based on “you”, “your”, etc.
The original revelation – in English – does not have this grandiloquent tone, quite the opposite, since the revelators use a simple and divested speech. The only complexities we find there concern occasionally the concepts, never the discourse pattern.

THE NEED FOR NEW WORDS
The need for the creation of new words, words that the revelators deemed necessary to create because they were inexistent in the English language, will be respected.
The Foundation’s Portuguese first translation sometimes opted for existent words in Portuguese that weren’t sufficiently meaningful and were already applied for several routinely aspects of life. Thus, when the revelators create a new word, the translation must also mirror that new creation.
One of those words is: Midwayer.
Midwayers
The word “Midwayer” doesn’t exist in English. So, the revelators had to come up with a name suitable to define these creatures’ nature and function in the universe.
The old Portuguese version has opted for the expression “Seres Intermediários”, which in English means “Intermediary Beings”.
I wonder why the revelators didn’t themselves write “Intermediary Beings” when they had to convey the information on those beings. Why didn’t they choose existing words in English? The revelators warned us they would only give us new words when they wouldn’t be able to convey some information satisfactorily with existing words and concepts in English. Hence, in this case, they opted to create a new word: Midwayers.
Basically, Midwayer means a being who lives on an intermediary dimension between the physicality of humans and the spiritual plane of angels. The Midwayers’ function in the universe is to provide some sort of existential bridge filling the gap between the material realms and the morontia and spiritual realms.
As such, I believe it wasn’t correct to use existing terms in Portuguese, terms which are used for other concepts and utilitarian purposes, such as “Intermediary”. So many routinely aspects of life are branded with the term “intermediary”. I see it as an inadequate choice.
So, the issue now is: only because “Intermediary Beings” is the standard version of the first Portuguese translation should we everlastingly stick to it? I don’t think so. Again, why didn’t the revelators instructed us by saying “Intermediary Beings”? Why did they opt to create a new word for this concept unknown to the human culture?
That is why I opted for creating a new word: “Interplanário”.
“Interplanário” means a being who exists on an intermediate level between dimensions or planes. It is a term rooted in Latin – which is the major source of the Portuguese language – and is composed of three parts:
– “inter”, which in this case means “between”;
– “plano”, which in this case means “dimension” or “plane”;
– “ário”, which in this case refers to a being and its function and origin.

RESPEITO PELAS OPÇÕES DE ESCRITA DOS REVELADORES
Esta tradução visa estar mais próxima do original e desprovida de qualquer estilo de escrita pessoal, uma vez que os Documentos de Urântia devem ser entregues ao longo de vários séculos à frente, para as gerações vindouras que terão uma mentalidade muito diferente, e as opções dos reveladores pelo conteúdo e estilo certamente tinha tudo isso em mente.
Os reveladores são pessoas celestiais, cientistas e filósofos espirituais cósmicos experientes. Não foi por acaso as palavras que escolheram e como as expressaram.
Justamente por não se tratar de um texto qualquer, mas A REVELAÇÃO DIVINA para toda a humanidade ao longo do Terceiro Milênio, optamos por seguir o texto que os reveladores nos deram; então, em vez de qualquer estilo de escrita pessoal, nos concentramos no que e como os reveladores escolheram para entregar sua mensagem.

QUAL VERSÃO DE IDIOMA SERÁ PREDOMINANTE?
Para os não falantes de português, é preciso deixar claro que no que se refere a um discurso formal – como é o caso dos Documentos de Urântia – a língua é basicamente a mesma, seja do Brasil, de Portugal ou das ex-colônias africanas e asiáticas. Encontramos apenas uma ligeira diferença no uso dos pronomes pessoais, embora mesmo assim todos os usos sejam facilmente e inequivocamente compreendidos por qualquer falante de português de qualquer continente.
Tendo isso em mente, decidiu-se nesta tradução usar a versão brasileira, considerando que o Brasil tem mais de 210 milhões de pessoas (e aumentando rapidamente, pois esta é uma nação de dimensões continentais), e Portugal tem algo como 11 milhões de habitantes (e com poucas possibilidades de expansão – na verdade, os brasileiros estão “invadindo” Portugal e, por exemplo, Braga, a terceira maior cidade de Portugal, já tem mais de 10% de emigrantes brasileiros e essa percentagem está aumentando) . No que diz respeito às ex-colônias da África, ali só usam o português como língua oficial porque suas línguas nativas estão difundidas por muitas línguas tribais. Podemos afirmar com certeza que a língua portuguesa a longo prazo será cada vez mais brasileira.
Uma mudança significativa em relação à versão mais antiga será nos pronomes, já que o formato de tradução anterior para o português é baseado em “vós”, “vossos”, etc., que na Bíblia é comparável à versão King James, e esta nova tradução será baseada em “vocês”, “seus”, etc.
A revelação original – em inglês – não tem esse tom grandiloquente, muito pelo contrário, já que os reveladores usam um discurso simples e despojado. As únicas complexidades que encontramos ali dizem respeito, ocasionalmente, aos conceitos, nunca ao padrão do discurso.

A NECESSIDADE DE NOVAS PALAVRAS
A necessidade de criação de novas palavras, palavras que os reveladores julgaram necessário criar por serem inexistentes na língua inglesa, será respeitada.
A primeira tradução para o português da Fundação optou às vezes por palavras existentes em português que não eram suficientemente significativas e já eram aplicadas em vários aspectos da vida cotidiana. Assim, quando os reveladores criam uma nova palavra, a tradução também deve espelhar essa nova criação.
Uma dessas palavras é: Midwayer.
Midwayers
A palavra “Midwayer” não existe em inglês. Então, os reveladores tiveram que encontrar um nome adequado para definir a natureza e a função dessas criaturas no universo.
A antiga versão em português optou pela expressão “Seres Intermediários”, que em inglês significa “Intermediary Beings”.
Eu me pergunto por que os próprios reveladores não escreveram “Intermediary Beings” quando tiveram que transmitir as informações sobre esses seres. Por que eles não escolheram palavras existentes em inglês? Os reveladores nos avisaram que só nos dariam novas palavras quando não pudessem transmitir alguma informação satisfatoriamente com palavras e conceitos existentes em inglês. Assim, neste caso, eles optaram por criar uma nova palavra: Midwayers.
Basicamente, Midwayer significa um ser que vive numa dimensão intermediária entre a fisicalidade dos humanos e o plano espiritual dos anjos. A função dos Midwayers no universo é fornecer algum tipo de ponte existencial preenchendo a lacuna entre os reinos materiais e os reinos moronciais e espirituais.
Dessa forma, acredito que não foi correto utilizarem termos existentes em português, termos que são usados para outros conceitos e propósitos utilitários, como “Intermediário”. Muitos aspectos rotineiros da vida são marcados com o termo “intermediário”. Vejo isso como uma escolha inadequada.
Então, a questão agora é: só porque “Seres Intermediários” é a versão padrão da primeira tradução para o português devemos nos ater a ela perpetuamente? Acho que não. Novamente, por que os reveladores não nos instruíram dizendo “Seres Intermediários”? Por que optaram por criar uma palavra nova para esse conceito desconhecido da cultura humana?
Por isso optei por criar uma nova palavra: “Interplanário”.
“Interplanário” significa um ser que existe num nível intermediário entre dimensões ou planos. É um termo de raiz latina – que é a principal fonte da língua portuguesa – e é composto por três partes:
– “inter”, que neste caso significa “entre”;
– “plano”, que neste caso significa “dimensão” ou “plano”;
– “ário”, que neste caso se refere a um ser e sua função e origem.
